I've lived with my former roommate for the last 6 years after moving into our old apartment from a Craigslist ad. Worked out so well, we decided to get another place together.

Communal areas are always clean and we always agreed to provide each other with some notice if we had out-of-town guests crashing for a few nights (which was rarely anyways) so the next roommate should ideally value these things too.
